Hot Tub Lounge Seat: Should You Get One?

Do you want a lounge seat in a hot tub? The answer is maybe.
In general, you want a lounger on your hot tub if your priority is to use massage and you like to recline in the water.
You want an all-seats hot tub if you prefer to sit up straight and you’d like more room in the hot tub, as seats take up less space.
There is more to it than that, of course. But that’s the quickest, most efficient answer we can give you.We get this question all the time at Hydropool as it's one everyone must reckon with when making a hot tub purchase.
We will break down every side of the argument that we can and show you all the seats available. In this article, we will cover:
- What a lounger or lounge seat is
- Who should get a lounger and who should get more seats
- All the types of seats
Hopefully, by the end, you’ll have a strong sense of which seating is right for you.

What is a lounge seat, or lounger in a hot tub?

A lounge seat is one of the most luxurious spots on a hot tub, including the spot on this Hydropool Signature 779.
A lounge seat is longer and allows you to stretch your body out. It’s named after a lounge chair, for example, that you might find on the beach and it works the same way. You half lie down, half sit. This allows the massage to go all over your body, all at the same time.
A more traditional hot tub chair has you sitting up in a more upright position, rather than reclining.
Who should get a lounger?

The lounger, shown at the bottom here, typically takes up two corners of any hot tub, including this Hydropool Signature 779.
You should get a lounger if:
- You’re looking for a full body hydrotherapy massage. For example, if you’re an athlete.
- You want to sit and lie back in the water and relax in the most luxurious position possible.
- You don’t mind giving up a little bit of water space inside your hot tub. A lounger takes two corners, generally, so you lose a captain’s chair position as a result.
Who should get more seats?

A full-seat hot tub, or all-seater, like this Hydropool Signature 728, allows for the most room for people and for multiple seating options.
You should get an all-seats hot tub if:
- You’re looking to entertain. An all-seats hot tub holds more people.
- You can’t find a lounge seat that fits you. One of the drawbacks of loungers is that if you’re not the right size, sitting in a lounge chair will never feel quite right.
- You want the widest range of hydrotherapy options, moving from seat to seat.
What are the types of hot tub seats?
You have choice, but in most cases your options are going to include something like this:

The lounger: This is the feature seat in many hot tubs. You get a full body massage and get to feel like you’re the king of the castle.

The S-lounger: This is a smaller lounger, more like an Adirondack chair. It's ideal for anyone under 5-foot-7. You’re reclining, but not entirely. Hydropool’s Signature 455 has an S-lounger.

The double lounger: Two loungers side by side! This edition is often called "the Honeymooner," for what we hope are obvious reasons. This is Hydropool's Signature 799.

The captain’s chair: This is like a big easy chair in your living room. It usually features one of the best overall massages and can be as good as a lounge seat.

The swivel seat: A rare one, but it's a seat that allows you to change position while remaining in the same seat and getting an entirely different experience. Hydropool's Signature 679 has a swivel seat.

The standard seat: This seat is often slightly higher, which is why it is often called a cool-off seat. If you're larger, more of your body is exposed outside of the hot tub. If you're smaller, it will feel just right.
The bench seat: It's rare but sometimes there, especially with round tub models, where a sculpted seat takes up too much room (round models are notoriously uncomfortable, with rounded backs to lean against). We don't know why you'd want to do this, but you can. Hydropool doesn't offer this style of seat on any of its models.
Can’t decide about lounge or not? Here’s what to do
There’s one place guaranteed to help you make up your mind, but it will involve a trip to the local hot tub store. A local store will allow you to sit in the various hot tubs and try out the seats on offer. We wish everyone did this! They would be much happier before they bought, because they would be confident that the seats in the hot tub actually fit them.
It’s impossible to build a hot tub that fits everyone perfectly, and this goes doubly so if you’re crafting a lounge chair. So heading to a local dealer, who will happily let you sit in as many hot tubs as you wish, is really your best way to solve the issue. If you’re not sure after reading this article, we’d encourage you to go try them out.We regularly see people change their minds on what tub they want after actually sitting in the different seats. It makes a major difference.
Should I get a lounge seat or not with my hot tub?
It’s a great question and one of the most debated ones out there in the hot tub world. Are you a lounger or not? There’s no wrong answer. You may think you're one and actually be the other!
Both styles of hot tubs can give you great joy and be places where you and your family can spend time together. And is that what having a hot tub is all about?
A lounger is best for someone who wants to stretch out and relax or use the jets on their full body, all at the same time. An all-seats hot tub is best for anyone who has an emphasis on socializing or just prefers a seating position at all times.
